Featured Maker: Heather Hawker at The Silver Birdcage

Congratulations to Heather at The Silver Birdcage for celebrating three years in business! She has really cute, fun and whimsical pieces but lately we've been noticing some of her beautiful Mandala designs.

I started stamping in November 2013 after getting a starter kit for my birthday! After much practise I opened my online shop in Jan 2014. I am so proud to be able to say I have just celebrated my third year in business.

I started off stamping on spoons as I loved the idea of being able to make some thing personalised that can be used or kept as a keepsake. After a while I realised there was so much more to learn and discover with hand stamping. I started making a few necklaces for myself with my girls names on. I then made a few gifts for friends and as they went down so well decided to offer them to my customers.

Being able to sell items that I have made has always been a dream of mine. I think I am quite a creative person and I love to learn new things! Over the years I have taught myself / dabbled in painting, cake decorating and I even did a part time jewellery making course back in 2005/6.

I plucked up the courage and opened my shop when I was at the end of my Maternity leave. I knew there would never be a 'right time' to do it so I decided to give it a go. Unless you try, you never know. I didn't want to leave it too long and then be wondering why I didn't give it a go?

I would say my favourite kinds of jewellery are probably cuff bracelets. This is probably because I have / wear so many myself! I love that you have the choice of stamping on a hidden side so you have a secret message just for you. I am also so excited to have just bought a Dremel and so am looking forward to trying out some new designs using sea glass this year.

There are so many things about metal stamping I love! It's a great creative outlet that can be taken up as a hobby to make gifts for friends / family or it can be turned into the business. There is such a wide variety of things you can make and personalise to make truly one of a kind gifts. Plus you get to play with a lot of tools and hammers which is always good fun!

I would say the ones I get asked for most commonly by my customers are hearts and stars however I have a long list of personal favourites! The Dandelion and Fluff stamp is so pretty and detailed it's hard not to love that one. I think all of the Beaducation animals range is brilliant and I have a lot of them already. I also couldn't live without Beaducation 11mm Heart and the Beaducation Robot!

Inspiration for my work comes from all over. Of course there are trends which come and go however the work I love to make the most is anything involving inspirational sayings or words of advice. To be able to make something which can give someone a lift in their day is just perfect for me. The world we live in can sometimes be crazy and staying positive can be hard. If I can help someone remember they are not alone and to reach out for help when it all gets too much then I'm happy.
