Pliers for Jewelry Making & How to Use Them

It's a crazy world out here with so many plier options so we thought we would break it down for ya. If you already have an idea of the plier(s) you might be interested in, click below for a video on how to use it. Otherwise continue on for some help in which pliers can help you best with your jewelry making project.

Cutting jump rings is easy...when you have Coil Cutting Pliers
Ever need just a few jump rings but have trouble making perfect cuts? Use the Coil Cutting Plier and the jewelers saw and soon you will be making jump rings with ease.

This unique tool holds wire coils so that they can be efficiently cut into jump rings. Made of stainless steel, the Coil Cutting Pliers feature a jaw which firmly but gently grasps coils ranging from 4.5-9.0mm outside diameter. There is a slit in the jaws which allow the user to quickly cut multiple jump rings with a jewelers saw. Pliers are box-jointed with pvc comfort grips, and 7" long.

This is a great tool if you just need to cut a small pile of jump rings. I found it very easy and comfortable to use. The pin at the bottom is for bracing the pliers on your work table or for inserting into your Bench Pin for stabilization.

Nylon Jaw Bending Pliers are super cool!
This tool is so very super cool. It really takes away the need to have a Steel Round Bracelet Mandrel which is really heavy and expensive.

With a gentle arc for bracelets, the nylon jaws of these pliers prevent marring. Makes shaping and reshaping bracelets easy. Just squeeze, squeeze, squeeze along your metal to form a perfectly arched circle to then be form fitted to your wrist.
  • Nylon jaws to prevent marring your metal.
  • Plastic dipped handles.
  • Sturdy box-joint.

We offer Replacement Jaws for these pliers. Check out our full line of Nylon Jaw Pliers.
Woooweee, big holes in everything with our Power Punch Plier!
We have been having fun with this tool.  This tool also has a side gauge for depth adjustment up to 2 inches.

This Power Punch has a specially designed compound action and seven hardened cutting dies to punch through thick metal with ease.

You can punch through metals up to 16 gauge in thickness.  Comes in lightweight carrying case with handle.  Each punch and die is individually marked with size for ease and accuracy.

To change the punches in this tool, you need to swap out both the punch and the die.  To change out the die, simply unscrew it.  To change out the punch, use the included key to unscrew the screw on the lower throated handle, and slide out the punch.  Make sure the punch and the die are the same size.  Please wear safety glasses when using this tool.

Solder Cutting Pliers for, well, cutting solder wire.
To cut perfectly sized lengths of wire for soldering, insert the wire into the hole on the side of the pliers so it lays all the way across the gap in the head. You will be able to see the wire through the opening. Then simply clip and tilt the tool and your perfect length of wire will fall out.

After cutting your solder wire, make sure and keep each type separate. Use a small ziplock baggie or little box to keep them sorted. The last thing that you want to do is mix your easy, medium and hard solders!

Wrap, tap, loop (and do a little happy dance) with Stepped Round Nose Pliers
Lisa shows how to make perfect loops every time. Great for shaping earwires, loops or chain links. Want to watch Lisa Niven Kelly demonstrate how to use Stepped Round Nose PliersClick here!

These handy pliers are great for making perfectly sized loops, coils or jump rings.
  • 6 different loop size options (3 on each jaw); 2mm, 2.5mm, 3.5mm, 5mm, 7mm, and 8mm.
  • Made from stainless steel.
This tool can shape rings, toggle clasps, ear wires and more. These pliers are especially good for looping half round wire or stock that has a pattern.
  • Cushion grips.
  • Made of stainless steel.
  • Medium: The barrel sizes are 5mm, 7mm and 10mm.
  • Large: The barrel sizes are 13mm, 16mm and 20mm.

I am digging these pliers Medium and Large Wrap and Tap Pliers. No longer do I have to search for the right diameter mandrel to wrap my wire around. I use these mostly to make the hook on an ear wire (the part that goes through your ear) or to make the circle side of a toggle clasp.

Coiling Pliers for making loops, coils and pretty things.
Make loops and coils without nicking precious wire. Normal concave/convex pliers nick, but the Coiling Pliers allows you to hold the wire with the flat jaw while rotating the round jaw to form the perfect loop.
  • Comfort grips.
  • Non-rust, highly polished stainless steel jaws and standard step-jaw for consistent loops and coils.
  • The stepped jaws on these pliers are 5.5mm, 3.5mm and 2mm.
Do you ever need to whip out a quick coil to use as a bead or to cut up into jump rings? It's hard to get a perfect one on your round nose pliers because they are tapered. These pliers have a stepped jaw so you can stay on any given step to make a perfect and consistent coil.

Just make sure that the tip of the first loop in your coil is pointed towards the tip of the tool. Then, as you feed the wire on, the coil will grow off of that initial coil, and you can keep it cranking as long as you want!
