How To Solder a Jump Ring

"How do I solder a jump ring on my hand stamped pendant?" is a question that we get at least once a day.

You'll need to start with solder and a torch used for jewelry. This is not the same thing as a soldering iron or solder from the hardware store. The right tools for the job will give you the best results.

Beaducation has the tools you'll need on our website.
Torch
Soft Paste Solder
Kiln Brick
Solder Pick

We also have helpful product tutorials that teach you how to use essential soldering products:

To get started, place the hand stamped blank on the kiln brick. Add soft paste solder to the join on the jump ring.

The photo below is for reference only. The jump ring should be threaded through the hole in the metal blank. This is a 4mm, 18-gauge jump ring. You can see the amount of solder covers the join completely.

Position the blank on the kiln brick so the join is away from the blank. That way you won't end up soldering the jump ring and blank together.

Use a torch to solder the ring together.

The piece will have firescale after it is heated.

Let the pendant cool and remove the firescale with a Pro Polish Pad. If the firescale is stubborn, you'll need to pickle the pendant using Sparex to thoroughly clean it.

Check out this closeup of the solder join. The solder flowed completely, closing the gap in the jump ring.

If you are just starting out or if your soldering skills are a little rusty, we recommend trying out a couple of our online video classes. Never taken a Beaducation class online? The way our classes work is simple and they're fun and informative. It's like having your instructor right by your side every step of the way. The class never expires, so you can watch the class again and again anytime on your computer.

We recommend the following classes.

Introduction to Soldering teaches a variety of soldering skills including safety, workplace set up, making and soldering chain links and many more skills to get you on your way.

Simple Soldered Pendants is a short course on soldering two blanks together to make a pendant. It's a great class to get you started if you want to make a simple stamped pendant that hangs on a necklace or bracelet.

Good luck! Got a question about soldering? Post 'em in the comments and we'll help you out.
